Collbran Colorado

Cowboys and rodeos have been around Collbran Colorado for as long as it has existed, and for many years, ranching was the primary industry. Ranching in the past consisted primarily of raising cows, sheep, pigs, horses, and the hay to feed them! Although some of these family ranching operations continue, many ranchers have had to section and sell their land to survive. Some of the new landowners have continued the ranching tradition, though. The valley is home to elk, llama and goat ranches too now. Our history and heritage blend with the present and become quite apparent every April and October when herds of cows and sheep are still driven by cowboys on horses (or ATVs) to and from the summer pastures.

Grand Mesa National Forest and BLM state lands

 Collbran Colorado sits along Plateau Creek in a valley at an elevation of 5987'. Collbran is surrounded with beauty and a multitude of opportunities for those who enjoy the outdoors. No matter what direction you go from Collbran, you will find at least one public access road to BLM state lands and the Grand Mesa National Forest Service land.  Surrounded on the north and east by 9,000 foot Battlement Mesa, and on the south and west by 11,000 foot Grand Mesa, the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, the Plateau Valley is a hidden gem you'll want to find.  The top of the Grand Mesa covers an area of roughly 30 by 50 miles, has over 200 stocked trout lakes, over 85 miles of roads and at least 269 miles of hiking, mountain biking, ATV, jeep, 4WD, and/or horseback trails.

Vega Lake recreation area and state park

Twelve miles east of Collbran Colorado is Vega Reservoir, a state recreation area where camping, fishing, boating, water skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling are available in their seasons. Numerous campgrounds and resorts are located across the Grand Mesa and at Vega Reservoir. Food and lodging are available at all resorts, and some also have fuel.  Boat and ATV rentals as well, at the Vega Lake Recreation Area.
