Anaconda Montana

Anaconda MT is the county seat of Deer Lodge County located in the southwest corner of Montana.  The beautiful Pintler mountains, also known as the Anaconda Range, surround this small community.  Anaconda is a community rich with history.  It was originally founded by Marcus Daly, one of the famous Copper Kings of the late 1800's, due to its poximity to the mining and smelting operations nearby.  While the Washoe Smelter shut down in 1981, the Anaconda Smelter Stack still remains and is the tallest surviving masonry structure in the world with an overall height of 585 feet and is 76 feet in diameter at the base and 60 feet in diameter at the top.  While the smelter was demolished shortly after closing, the stack was saved by overwhelming local support and was officially designated the Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park in 1986.

Anaconda is also home to the famous Washoe Theater, the last of the Nuevo Deco style theaters constructed in the United States.  The Washoe Theater was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and is still used as a movie theater plus hosting plays, concerts, weddings, and other events.  

Anaconda Montana is a paradise for the lover of outdoor activities.  There are hundreds upon hundreds of square miles of public hunting available in the area.  Bear, mountain lion, elk, deer, moose, big horn sheep, mountain goats, and fowl are all commonly hunted in the area.  Fishermen can choose from Georgetown Lake, Echo Lake, Storm Lake, Silver Lake, Racetrack Lake, Warm Springs Creek and Ponds, and the Big Hole River all within a short drive.  Discovery Ski near Georgetown Lake is one of Western Montana's best kept secrets with over 2200 acres os skiing with lift operations extending often as late as March and April.
